Club Atletico River Plate defeated Chivas de Guadalajara in front of several thousand fans on Friday, June 28th in San Diego, California at SDCC Stadium. This was the inaugural match for the Colossus Cup. The tournament consists of four friendly matches between the two most popular teams from Mexico (Club America and Chivas de Guadalajara) and the two most popular teams from Argentina (Club Atletico Boca Juniors and Club Atletico River Plate).  River Plate dominated throughout the entire match and the 5-1 score reflected that.

Chivas played unorganized and undisciplined while River Plate was relentless with their attack and aggressive in their defense. The first goal for River Plate was scored by Nicolas De La Cruz on a free kick at the 27th minute. The free kick was just one of many opportunities the Argentine team’s players created for themselves. River Plate did not relent offensively even after the halftime rest. Nicolas Del La Cruz scored his second goal just a minute into the second half, making the score 3-0 then. Chivas’ only goal was the result of an own goal by River Plate at the 64th minute.

The crowd was composed primarily of Chivas fans and they continued to chant and support their team despite their lack of success on the field. Chivas fans cheered even the most minimal opportunities players created. “Chivas! Chivas! Chivas!” chants thundered through the stadium in addition to other chants.

The infamous “puto” jeer was again used by fans despite the international campaign against it. “Puto” is a derogatory term used against homosexuals and soccer fans should be encouraged to find an alternative. The chant is a bad representation of our shared Latino culture and it should be criticized so that an alternative replaces it. Aside from that blemish, the game brought together fans of Mexican and Argentine soccer under a cool California night and it appeared most had a good time. Fans even brought flares and fireworks to celebrate the opportunity to watch the competition between two of Latin America’s most popular soccer teams. .
