Golden Boy Promotions is famed Mexican American boxer Oscar De La Hoya’s boxing promotion company. From East Los Angeles, California, De La Hoya is the most successful Mexican American boxer winning a lightweight gold medal for the United States at the Barcelona 1992 Olympics and winning 11 world titles in six weight classes. He retired from boxing professionally after his December 2008 loss to Manny Pacquiao and remains an influential person in the sport. Through his promotion company he is creating opportunities for younger Mexican American boxers, including those featured on tonight’s Saturday March 14th, 2026 card at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. Anaheim in Orange County is a city that has developed economically with immigrant Mexican labor and now descendants of those laborers are taking center stage in one of the county’s biggest arenas because of Oscar De La Hoya.
Mexican American Arnold Barboza Jr. fighting out of Long Beach, California headlined the card boxing against Kenneth Sims Jr. His opponent appeared easy work for Barboza as indicated by the unanimous decision in Barboza’s favor at the end of the 12-round bout. It was fun to see The Honda Center filled with chanting Barboza supporters.
Referee Ray “Popeye” Corona and Gabriela Fundora
Gabriela Fundora successfully defended her WBC, WBA, IBF, WBO, and The Ring flyweight titles with a stoppage victory over Viviana Ruiz. The long and lanky lady tactfully used her significant reach advantage throughout the fight. Referee Ray “Popeye” Corona stopped the it in the 7th round following Fundora’s repeated physical punishment of Ruiz. After the fight, the victor spoke with me jubilantly about her Mexican and Cuban heritage. Her brother Sebastian Fundora praised her effort. He is scheduled to defend his WBC super-welterweight title against Keith Thurman on March 28th, 2026 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Alexis Rocha versus Joseph “JoJo” Diaz
Californian Mexican Americans Alexis Rocha of Santa Ana and Jojo Diaz of El Monte boxed each other in front of their local fans. Diaz is likely past his prime while Rocha is working towards earning more lucrative fights. They put on a good effort with Rocha earning the victory, and like Barboza, called out Mexican American Ryan Garcia for an opportunity at a bigger purse.
